Eye Tuck: Overview

Over time, the skin of the upper eyelids begin to sag and droop and the bottom lids develop puffy bags, extra skin and wrinkles.  This can make you look tired and older than you truly are.  Dr. Michael W. Gray can erase the signs of aging with an eye tuck to give you a youthful, vibrant appearance.

Eye Tuck: Procedure

There are many options when considering an eye tuck. You can improve the upper lid, the lower lid, or both of them together or separately depending on your desires.

Upper lids:
To enhance the upper lid, the eye tuck is performed by making an incision in the natural fold of the upper lid.  Dr. Gray removes excess skin and fat (when indicated), and then delicately stitches the incision closed with absorbable sutures. When healed this makes the eye tuck scar almost invisible.

Lower lids:
There are two ways to treat the lower lids. The method chosen depends on the problems that exist.

1. Subciliary Blepharoplasty: This procedure is designed to treat excess skin as demonstrated by the skin folding over the attachments to the bone of the lower lid. This procedure is performed by making an incision placed just below the eyelashes of the lower lid. The fat bulge producing the “bag” is removed (when indicated) and the extra skin is removed. The skin is replaced using absorbable sutures. Subciliary Blepharoplasty does not treat wrinkles so CO2 laser can be done 3 months later if wrinkle reduction is desired.

2. Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty with or without CO2 Laser:
This procedure can be done with an incision hidden on the inside of the lid. There are no need for sutures and no scars. This procedure is designed to reduce the bags of fat producing the bulge. CO2 laser can then be used to treat the skin of the lower lid. The heat generated by the CO2 laser smooths wrinkles and tightens skin. This procedure is indicated for individuals who have wrinkles, minimal to no extra skin and bulging fat.

Scarless Eye Tuck:
When a non-surgical option is desired, CO2 laser resurfacing of the eyelid skin is a viable option. Using CO2 laser on the skin of the lids allows a tightening and smoothing effect to be achieved without the need for surgery. Although a scarless eye tuck does not provide the same results as a surgical eye tuck, many patients are just as satisfied with the results.

Eye Tuck: Recovery

There is no discomfort associated with an eye tuck, however strenuous activity should be restricted for one week following the procedure.
