Dr. Michael W. Gray of the Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center and Skin Deep Spa has gained a national reputation as a skilled cosmetic surgeon. He is also known for always being ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. Dr. Gray was one of the first plastic surgeons to provide patients with a mobile app to learn more about their choices for procedures. Dr. Gray also made certain that Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center’s ANewYou.com website has a state-of-the-art Body Selection Tool, allowing patients to virtually see what they can expect after the procedure.

In 2014, Dr. Gray is making sure to stay ahead of other plastic surgeons when it comes to technology and tech innovation. Chosen as a Google Glass Explorer, Dr. Gray has been experimenting with Google Glasses for the past six months. While some other select surgeons around the world have also begun to use Google Glass in the operating room, Dr. Gray is the first cosmetic surgeon in Michigan to do so. Now, at Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center in West Bloomfield, it’s not unusual to see Dr. Gray scrubbing in after he puts on the cool looking, black wearable computer glasses with a built-in camera and monitor. With the Google Glass, Dr. Gray is able to have his hands completely free in the Operating Room while he takes any necessary photos, video or records notes that can be transcribed immediately for a report.

Having mastered the simple Google Glass voice commands, Dr. Gray is able to control his own computer without ever taking his eyes off his patient. One of the nice features of Google Glass has been taking before and after photos and immediately sending them to the patient’s spouse in the waiting room via email or SMS (text message). Dr. Gray was one of Google’s handpicked “explorers” who was able to test the Google Glass devices for $1,500. He will be recording and archiving many of the procedures he performs. It’s even possible for Dr. Gray to float medical images in his field of view as he performs the procedure.

“I’m always eager to put the latest tech gadgets in my arsenal of tools in the OR,” said Dr. Gray. “Whether it’s Google Glass or the next great invention that comes out, if I can find a way to use it to my patients’ advantage at the Michigan Cosmetic Center, I will. In the video below, Dr. Gray demonstrates some of the voice commands he typically uses with his Google Glass.
